For BNO passport holders, what is the safest form of identification to use when traveling to and from Hong Kong (XG)?

As the Chinese Hong Kong government does not recognize the BNO passport, it is not necessary for BNO passport holders to use any form of UK passport when traveling to or from Hong Kong. This can also help to minimize the risk of exposing UK passport information to the Chinese Hong Kong government system.

For individuals holding a British National (Overseas) (BNO) status, there are three forms of identification available: the Chinese Hong Kong ID card (HKID), the Chinese Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passport, and the BNO passport.

When traveling from Hong Kong (China) to the UK, BNO passport holders should present their Chinese HKSAR passport at the airline counter to demonstrate their right to enter the UK, and use their HKID for customs check at the Hong Kong airport. Upon arrival in the UK, they should use their BNO passport for customs clearance.

Using the HKSAR passport and HKID instead of the BNO passport can also reduce the likelihood of the Hong Kong government obtaining BNO information and identifying the number of individuals using it.

When traveling from the UK to Hong Kong, individuals should use their HKID at the airline counter to demonstrate their right to enter Hong Kong, their BNO passport for passport check in the UK, and their HKID upon arrival in Hong Kong. If traveling to a non-Hong Kong destination, such as Thailand from the UK, it is recommended to use only the BNO passport.
