Since its release on November 9, the Hong Kong film The Last Dance (Cantonese) has taken the box office by storm, quickly becoming the top-grossing premiere of 2024 in Hong Kong. Directed and written by Chan Mou Yin, the film stars renowned Hong Kong actors Dayo Wong, Michael Hui, Michelle Wai and Chu Pak Hong. With advance screenings in Hong Kong and Macau selling out two weeks in a row, The Last Dance has now set a new record for the highest number of opening-day screenings in the past decade, surpassing popular films like Table for Six 2, Cold War 2, and The Goldfinger. On its opening day, The Last Dance grossed £545,000 (HK$5.2 million), beating the previous record held by Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In of £544,000 (HK$5.19 million). By the evening of November 9, the cumulative box office reached over £630,000 (HK$6 million), marking it as one of the biggest Hong Kong film debuts in recent history. Leading actor Dayo Wong expressed his excitement, saying, “It feels incredible to break a record. I believe the film’s success is due to its ability to deliver a truly magical experience for audiences. I hope this extraordinary journey reaches even more people.” Since its release, The Last Dance has quickly crossed the £1 million (HK$10 million) mark in record time.
UK audiences can look forward to the film’s release in select theaters starting November 15.
